[T3] Removing fan housing while engine still in car?

Hello,

Having steadily worked my way towards the rear of the car, it's time  
to replace the fan housing.  A previous owner very seriously screwed  
up the port-side generator mount bolt -- near as I can tell, he broke  
it off, drilled a hole and tapped it, then subsequently cracked the  
housing at the hole.  The generator is being held on by the starboard  
bolt and what little purchase it can obtain from the port abomination.

I have obtained a replacement fan housing from ISP West that looks  
okay.  Not having access to a properly-equipped shop, I don't want to  
pull the engine unless it is absolutely unavoidable.  According to http://www.vw-resource.com/housing.html 
 it looks like it is possible to swap the housing only -- but I  
suspect those instructions are Beetle-specific and therefore not  
necessarily applicable.

Is this possible to do on a squareback?
