RE: black oil-was light flicker

I have limited knowledge of this.but here is what I think I know.

As soon as you run your engine with fresh oil for a little while, it begins
to break down, collect dirt etc. If you leave that oil in the engine for a
really long time/mileage it will get real dirty. When you go to change it,
there will probably still be some oil left in the engine. Dirty oil. When
you put fresh oil in, it will mix with the dirty oil. So for an engine that
has sat for a long time, or with really dirty oil, I recommend a couple oil
changes relatively close together, maybe 50 miles apart. This helps to clean
out all the gunk etc in the engine. I do this whenever I have left my cars
sitting for while, even when though I usually change the oil before putting
them in storage. An oil change is relatively cheap, and it makes me feel
good to get a little greasy ;)

As for your situation, I'd say it is probably a dirty engine, as it sounded
like it had not any maintenance for a while.
